The Gartner Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms Magic Quadrant for 2016 is out and Microsoft is positioned as a leader for the 9th year running, and this year pretty much the leader of the pack:
Tableau and Qlik also put in a strong position but still lag Microsoft which is interesting as a comment I picked up from a respected colleague on social media was bemoaning how Tableau and Qlik users seem to think Microsoft is not an enterprise tool…. same story I heard ten years ago and clearly a very persistent bit of FUD. I think they will be in a shock and possibly in need of some of our Power BI training soon!
It’s interesting to see that IBM (Cognos) isn’t looking that great and Oracle doesn’t even register. Also someone recently noted to me that Dynamics CRM + Power BI was a killer combination when compared to Salesforce’s very clunky offering, which is also reflected here.
Given the leap that will be offered by SQL 2016, and the ongoing investment in Power BI and other cloud analytics platforms by Microsoft, I think their position is very safe.
